Aged & Fresh
Mushroom Soil
Our mushroom compost, often referred to as mushroom soil, has been steam sterilized to kill all weed seeds. It has high plant nutrient content and water retention ability, which makes it a superior product for enriching, conditioning, mulching and balancing all soil types. This sterilized compost soil is formulated from animal manure, mulched hay and crushed corn cobs and then steam sterilized. This process produces a weed free compost, high fertility and mild enough for most indoor and outdoor plants.
Hawk Valley Landscape Materials offers both fresh and aged compost. Aged is about 6-9 months old compared to the fresh, which is straight out of the mushroom house.
Mushroom Compost Uses
Garden Soils
Apply garden compost 1 to 3 inches deep over the entire area and incorporate it into the top 4 inches of soil. It is good practice to mulch soil lightly with compost after seedlings grow 1 to 2 inches high to discourage weed growth, retain soil moisture, and protect against soil erosion.
Flower Beds
Apply compost to flower beds ½” to 1”deep and dig into the top 4” of soil. Flower beds may be mulched with compost to discourage weed growth, retain soil moisture and protect against soil erosion.
Lawn Seeding
For general soil enrichment, apply 1/2 to 1 inch of compost over the entire lawn area before seeding the lawn.
Orcharding & Trees
Apply compost under tree starting about 2-3 feet away from the trunk and extending about a foot beyond drip-line at the end of the branches. An annual application should be between 1/2 and 1 inch thick.
